Product Bundles & Kits

Product Bundles (also known as Kits or Assembled Sets) allow you to sell multiple individual items together under a single master SKU without manually assembling or pre-packaging stock in advance.

WMSBIZ features native bundled inventory management with real-time buildable inventory calculation, component breakdowns on picking lists, and automated component stock deduction upon fulfillment.

1. When to Use Bundled Products

Bundles are ideal for:

  • Gift Sets & Hampers: e.g., A "Luxury Coffee Gift Box" containing 1x French Press, 2x Coffee Mugs, and 1x 250g Coffee Beans.
  • Multipacks & Value Bundles: e.g., A "Buy 3 Pack" of socks or cables sold at a special promotional rate.
  • Hardware & Component Kits: e.g., A "Desk Setup Kit" consisting of a monitor mount, cable organizer tray, and power strip.
  • Finished Assemblies: Products assembled on-demand at the packing bench from stocked raw components.

2. Creating a Bundled SKU

  1. Navigate to Inventory > Products and click + New Product.
  2. In the Product Type dropdown, select BUNDLED.
  3. Enter the standard master product details:
    • SKU: The master bundle identifier (e.g., KIT-COFFEE-LUX).
    • Product Name: Display title for storefronts and invoices.
    • Barcode: Master bundle barcode for carton scanning.
  4. Scroll to the Bundle Components section:
    • Click + Add Component.
    • Search and select the first component SKU from your existing catalog.
    • Enter the Quantity per Bundle (e.g., 2 for a pack of two).
    • Repeat for all remaining components that make up the kit.
  5. Set Pricing:
    • Component Sum: Let WMSBIZ calculate the bundle price based on the individual component prices.
    • Bundle Price Override: Specify a custom bundle selling price (e.g., offering a £10 bundle discount).
  6. Click Save Product.

3. Real-Time "Buildable Inventory" Calculation

Unlike traditional static products where quantity is stored as a fixed count, the inventory of a bundled product is calculated dynamically:

$$\text{Buildable Inventory} = \min \left( \left\lfloor \frac{\text{Available Qty of Component } i}{\text{Qty Required of Component } i} \right\rfloor \right)$$

Example:

Consider a Coffee Gift Box requiring:

  • 1x French Press (Stock on Hand: 15 units)
  • 2x Mugs (Stock on Hand: 20 units)
  • 1x Coffee Beans (Stock on Hand: 50 units)

The buildable inventory is calculated as:

  • French Press: 15 / 1 = 15 kits
  • Mugs: 20 / 2 = 10 kits (Limiting factor)
  • Coffee Beans: 50 / 1 = 50 kits

WMSBIZ displays 10 Available Kits. If your storefront is connected via Shopify or WooCommerce, WMSBIZ pushes 10 as the available stock to prevent overselling. If a single mug is sold separately, the bundle stock automatically drops to 9.

4. Warehouse Picking & Fulfillment

When a customer orders a bundled SKU, your warehouse team does not have to guess what goes into the package:

  1. Pick & Pack Screen:
    • The pick wave displays the master bundle SKU and name.
    • Directly underneath, an expandable component breakdown lists each constituent part, along with its specific Warehouse Bin Location and required quantity.
  2. Scanning:
    • The operative scans the individual component barcodes at the bin location or packing bench to verify every piece is included.
  3. Delivery Note:
    • The delivery note PDF clearly displays the bundle name along with the itemized component parts, giving the customer complete clarity on what is inside the carton.

5. Automated Stock Deduction

When the order is dispatched and marked as SHIPPED:

  • The master bundle itself does not hold a separate physical ledger.
  • Instead, WMSBIZ automatically executes an internal stock deduction across all constituent component SKUs in the exact quantities required.
  • Bin allocation history and stock movement audit logs accurately reflect the reduction for each individual component part.
